River Tours in London
The river Thames meanders through the heart of London. Every bend is associated with some sort of history. The tour starts at Westminster Pier. This is very close to Westminster Abbey, where the coronation of kings and queens has taken place for about 1000 years. The Westminster Pier is also in the shadow of Big Ben’s Tower. It is close to the Churchill Museum, Cabinet War rooms of Whitehall and the Banquetting house.
Then, it is possible to see the County Hall, which was the headquarters of the London County council. Further, there is the Greater London council. However, the cries of councilors can no longer be heard in this council. The next spot to observe is the London Aquarium. This is followed by the Marriott Hotel, where visitors and businessmen come to relax.
After some yards, one can see the Millennium Wheel. This wheel is also called as the London Eye. It has a 25 minute ride during which one can have stunning views of London. Further, there exist the Jubilee and Hungerford foot bridges as well as the Charing Cross railway bridge. The Royal Festival Hall refreshes the memory of the post war days. During these days, the river carried about 6 million people to mark the Festival of Britain at this location.
Towards the north side, a stunning office development can be seen above Charing cross station. Then, one passes across Waterloo Bridge. After this bridge, the Somerset house can be seen. This house is a grandiose building on the north bank. In the past, there were many government offices in this house. Currently, this is a vibrant entertainment, heritage and arts center.
Ahead of the Somerset house and on the south bank, one can see the OXO tower. This tower consists of flats, restaurants and studios. The design of this tower was a successful maneuver to cross the ban of advertising along the riverside. Towards the north of Blackfriars Bridge, there is a home of Persil and other several household products as well as the head offices of Unilever, which is an Anglo-Dutch commercial giant.
After Blackfriar’s bridge, the visitor can have a view of St. Paul’s Cathedral on the north bank. The new Millennium footbridge has a pedestrian link with Bankside. In this region, the spot to be seen is the Tate Modern art gallery. Another location worth viewing is the Sam Wannamaker’s re-creation of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre. This theatre is the first building to have a thatched roof after the great fire of 1666.
Near London Bridge, there are three sites worth seeing – the retired battle cruiser HMS Belfast, the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. The Tower Bridge was inaugurated by Prince Albert in 1894. Close to the Canary Wharf, there are new residential, commercial and leisure developments. While observing these, a new commercial face of Docklands can be seen.
The Naval College and Seamen’s hospital has been assigned a new role of the prime campus of Greenwich University and Trinity College of Music. Then, one can see the National Maritime Museum. In Greenwich, there are other attractions like the Fan Museum, Queen’s house, the Old Royal Observatory and the clipper ship Cutty Sark.
