Two-third of London is covered with green space and water. In this way, it becomes one of the greenest places in the world.
Battersea Park is an important open area in central London. The ownership is by London Borough of Wandsworth and there is free public access. The habitats include amenity grassland, secondary woodland, scattered trees and a lake. The lake is a habitat of large numbers of waterfowl.
St. James’s park Green park and Buckingham palace gardens is owned by the Royal Parks and the Queen. The habitat consists of amenity grassland, veteran trees, scattered trees, hedge and ponds. A surprisingly large diversity of birds and other wildlife are found in this park.
Tooting common has the London Borough of Wandsworth as the owner. It consists of grassland, secondary woodland, scrub, scattered trees, pond and amenity grassland. There is free public access to most of the site.
Royal parks are an executive agency related to the Department for culture, media and sport. This agency runs some of the most famous parks in London. These parks are detailed below.
Bushy Park is the second largest of the Royal parks. It is spread over an area of 445 hectares. It is located to the north of Hampton court palace. There are almost 320 free roaming deer at this place.
The Green Park has an area of 19 hectares. This has mature trees and grassland. On its periphery are the Queen’s walk, Piccadilly and the Constitution Hill. Greenwich Park is the oldest enclosed Royal Park. Its area is 74 hectares. A tiny herd of fallow and red deer have made this park their home. As this park is situated on top of a hill, there is an excellent view across the river Thames to St. Paul’s Cathedral. This park is the host of the Prime Meridian Line and the old Royal Observatory.
The Hyde Park is spread over an area of 142 hectares. This park has more than 4000 trees, horse rides, a meadow and a lake. This is London’s finest historic landscapes. When one is inside this park, he easily forgets he is in the midst of London.
Kensington Garden is spread over an area of 111 hectares. This park is a good place for Kensington Palace, the Serpentine gallery, Peter pan statue, the Albert Memorial and the peaceful Italian gardens. This park has formal avenues of magnificent trees and ornamental flower beds.
The Regent’s park has an impressive rose garden. This garden has more than 30,000 roses of 400 varieties. This is the largest outdoor sports area in London. Out of the 166 hectares, almost 100 hectares are meant for sports fans of diverse types.
The Richmond park is the largest Royal park in London. It is spread over an area of nearly 1000 hectares. The grasslands amidst ancient trees, gardens, ponds, woodlands and hills make this a very peaceful place. There are about 650 free roaming deer. This park is called as a Special Area of Conservation, a site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve.
In the heart of London is the St. James’s park. Its area is 23 hectares. There is a lake that has pelicans, geese and ducks. This park houses the Mall where many ceremonial parades and events of national celebration are held.
